At the start of the summer I swore that I would quit my maintenance job if I had to do any plumbing or painting.

So anyway, today I was doing some plumbing, and it was awful. They're remodeling some suites in Tower Village, including ripping up the old linoleum and putting in new linoleum floor tiles. In order for them to do this, our plumber had to go around a month ago and pull up the toilets. Instead of hauling the toilets off to the shop or the warehouse for storage, he just stuck them in the showers for safekeeping. Well wouldn't you know, the contractors who put in the floor tiles went right ahead and used these toilets anyway. These toilets that were sitting in the showers. On several sheets of cardboard. WHAT THE HELL?!?!?!!!!! What kind of idiot does that? There are plenty of usable toilets all over Tower Village, all available to anyone who isn't too lazy and stupid to walk one or doors down. Instead, these idiots used toilets that were sitting in shower stalls. I totally lost faith in human nature.

This job was gross enough without that kind of trouble, though. We were going around and scraping up the old wax seals, then installing new ones. And by "we," I mean that I was doing that. This is already an intensely gross job. The wax seal is what connects the toilet to the sewer pipe, and prevents anything you flush from seeping out onto your floor. Needless to say, they're pretty gross. And pretty sticky. Once you get some of that wax on you, it's very hard to get off, because naturally, water just beads up and runs off it. So anyway, I did that all afternoon. When we finished with that, we went around with coathangers and snaked hairballs out of the shower drains. That was a welcome relief for me. It didn't bother me at all. Our Indian helper nearly threw up when I showed him all the hairballs I pulled out (we pull them out, then dump them into a 5 gallon bucket, which we later empty into a dumpster). He said he'd rather deal with full toilets than hairballs. That's saying a lot, considering that he's the guy responsible for moving the full toilets out of the showers, hopefully without spilling anything.

Here's something for you out of my email database from 3 years ago. When I'm bored or procrastinating, I like to read through old emails. Today's fortune also comes from an old email.

It's great to see that the pro music-industry movement in congress is so completely shameless.

Last night Errich and I were talking about going down to the Black Cat Lounge to see the Flametrick Subs, but I just found out that the place burned down a year ago. That sucks.
