Hey, I have an idea, let's all act like assholes towards each other. It'll be like road rage. If you can't actually see the person's face, then there can't be a real human behind the wheel, right? I think this must be the justification people use for acting like morons when they're on the road, or when they're typing out a message on the internet.
maybe we could avoid acting like stupid animals if we stopped for half a second and pictured a friendly face at the wheel of that car, or at a keyboard in houston?

Killer Japanese Seizure Robots. I watched the page for 5 minutes without having any seizures. My eyelid twitched once, but that's about it.

I was just doing some work and listening to NPR. The interviewer was talking to some PR guy for the Carlyle Group. She kept asking, over and over again, whether the Bush family should disassociate itself from the Carlyle Group, as the bin Laden family is also invested in the company. She said, "Wouldn't it behoove them to avoid any allegations of impropriety?" And he kept saying, "no, I don't think so. How is there a conflict of interest?"
He's right. There is no impropriety there. The bin Laden family is enormous, first of all, and have investments all over the world. They're legitimate businessmen in the Middle East and abroad, and the United States government has worked with them in the past. Moreover, they've done a lot to distance themselves from Osama in the last 10 years. But never mind that, they're only invested in the Carlyle Group. If I were a sheriff, would it be improper for me to own stock in the same company as a criminal? Or, more accurately, would it be a conflict of interest for me to be heavily invested in the same company as the family of a criminal? It's not even a tenuous connection. At best, it's almost a coincidence, but not quite.
Which reminds me that the progressives are all ape-shit over Haliburton's contracts in Iraq. Give me a break. There are only so many major defense contractors out there. I know Cheney is the former CEO, and that his blind trust is probably heavily invested in the company. Nevertheless, someone had to get these jobs, and Haliburton is certainly more than qualified. It's crazy and very simple-minded to think that Bush and Cheney would stage the war to line their own pockets. They're already rich. They're operating on a different level than most of their critics, and I think they're up to something far more sinister than making a buck off a simple conflict of interest.

I've been busy the past week or so, and have some catching up to do.
First, I bought a car. A 1974 Ford Country Squire. Like the one in the link, it has the 400 V8 and all the options except power windows. The A/C and cruise are non-functional. The power rear window works great though, and this is a model equipped with the tailgate swing gate. With the rear window all the way down, it can open like a pick up truck tailgate, and with the window in any position it can open like a door. A six foot wide door. The carburetor has had the choke removed, and has been adjusted so that it will run when cold without it, which means that is is out of tune when warm. It still gets about 10 MPG when driven aggressively, and with a $12 kit it should run better and closer to 14. Incidentally, the 400 V8 is a fairly hotrodable engine, and for under $2K I could have it at around 600 HP and 600 ft-lbs of torque. I'm going to wait on that a while.
Austin Haught, my roommate from high school, is back from the Persian Gulf and his nine and a half month ride on the USS Abraham Lincoln. He was not aboard when GW was there, though. To make room for press and staff and such, crew were offered 5 days leave in Hawaii and a plane ride to Tacoma. He took it. I'm going to fly up to Tacoma next weekend to visit him.
I've pretty much set on the idea of opening a BBQ restaurant. My whole family is pretty interested in the idea, even my dad, to my surprise. Without saying it was a bad idea or foolish or the like, he critiqued the building I was looking at renting. He gave a list of things it would need, but it sounds like it could be bought on the cheap. I was going to rent, but buying is probably a better long term option. To keep capital investment down and make said investment more recoverable in case of failure, I've been looking at ebay and restaurant supply auctions for going prices and good deals. I'm watching some stuff I might bid on, and if I get it, I'll be going to Illinois in the next few weeks to pick it up. I'm working on designs for a pit, but think I might have lucked into a very cool historical one for little or nothing.

This site is really interesting regarding what people see and don't see in various scenes. The clips on gradual scene changes got me on every try except one.. It requires Quick Time (downloadable at the site) and works a lot better re time if you have broadband

I thought it was supposed to work the other way around. People without real jobs are supposed to be prolific posters, whereas people with jobs are supposed to be prolific readers. Jeremy, you need to pick up the pace a little.

It's a sad state of affairs when you realize how happy you just were when you found out that your chances of moving in with your dad just went way up.
one of my friends from work got laid off about a year and a half ago. about 8 or so months after he was laid off, we started to hire people again. I suggested that we hire my friend back, since he hadn't found another job. the boy had a 3.7 GPA in electrical engineering, and was laying asphault part time. they hired him back, mostly because i kept bugging them about it. i just got laid off, and he didn't. I have about 5 months left on my lease. he just told me that he has finally decided to move out of his parents house. I just sent him an email telling him not to put down a deposit anywhere until he talks to me.
I think it's payback time.
