Yes, Duke Power is in a tight spot. Earlier today they said there were more than 1.5 million people still without power. We went to Sam's today, and about every third person was buying a generator. That's something they'll prolly use once in the next 5 years. Hopefully I'll be able to pick up a used generator on the cheap in a few months. Maybe a nice kerosene heater, too.

Our power was out yesterday morning. It went out at 7:15, just as we were hitting the snooze button on the alarm (UNCG didn't open until 10 yesterday morning). No heat, and it was still pretty cold outside. It turned into a Lord of the Flies situation pretty quickly. At 10:15, our power came back on. The temperature in the den never dropped past 60 degrees. Meanwhile, some people may not have power until the end of the week. We think ours came back on so fast because we're in the same power grid as some fairly important stoplights. People two blocks south of us just got their power back today, after 48 hours without.

Yesterday a Duke Power spokesperson said they were actually losing ground as the ice thawed. Apparently trees that took down power lines as they fell over were taking out repaired power lines as the ice melted and the trees popped back up. Sounds pretty short-sighted to me.

That's funny. I thought North Carolina was totally powerless forever. Surprised to see Andy show up. You might have already seen this, but I found it kind of interesting.

Most of the world hates us because we come across as arrogant, self-righteous, do-gooder assholes

A good feeling is:
When you leave the company christmas party right before you have that drink that pushes you to the point of hunting your boss down and making an ass or yourself in front of his wife. Oh, and it's a bonus that you were able to maintain that control 2 days after the company fired several people for "performance" reasons.

In an effort to bolster our lagging traffic, we're switching from topic-oriented commentary to infotainment. Click here to see a house blow up.

I can already tell you what the outcome of the State Department's conference will be: "The bombings will continue until your attitudes improve."

Please take time to note Uzbekistan's 85% favorable rating of the US. I think this is probably an important sign of some kind.

The US State Department is due to host a conference on why there is so much anti-American sentiment in the world.

I'd like to unilaterally lead a coalition against the US state department.

There was a time when you'd be glad to be alive after surviving an incident like the Moscow theater fiasco. These days, though, the typical course of action is to sue your rescuers. Sure, the Russian special forces made mistakes, but if they hadn't used that gas to knock out the Chechens, then all the hostages would have died. And if they had waited much longer, the Chechens would have massacred the hostages and blown themselves up. But it's not enough that the Russians saved these people's lives. Now these so-called victims want the Russians to make them rich, as well.

So what. The metric system is still better than the nasty mishmash of units we use in the US.

Why is this blog dying? We're all interesting people with original ideas. Or, at least we're capable of forming our own conclusions based on others' information. I don't know if that's the same as an original idea, but it's a sign of intelligence nevertheless.

What a crappy monday. This weekend my dad and I ripped apart my car, replaced a pipe that had a catalytic converter with one that doesn't, and ate some deep fried spicy bird. I only mention all of it because I think it might be the last time I'm in the same town as my parents for any prolonged period of time. Well, I guess I should say "i hope". I've now lived by myself in this apartment in houston for a year. I'm not completely sure what to think about that. It sucks that I'm still in houston, but it's good that i don't have to live with one of my parents. I think it's really time to move on, now.

By the way, Uncle George posted this over the weekend, but then their site crashed and stayed down for two days so he deleted the link. I'm reposting it now because it seems like they finally got back online this morning when they showed up for work.

It's an atlas of online geography. Looks pretty neat.

There's a case before the Supreme Court that could very well take away any Miranda rights you thought you had. Instead of me railing against the Oxnard police and district attorneys, why don't you just post to flooz if you think there's anything reasonable about the policeman's behavior. (Aside from shooting the guy, which seems like a fairly reasonable course of action when struggling for your life...if indeed that's what actually happened.)
